On the 4th day of the 6th month according to the Tibetan calendar (25th of July) the birthday of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche was celebrated at Jangchubling Monastery. It was his 64th birthday according to Tibetan tradition, corresponding to the 63rd in western style.
The program started at 8 a.m. with an auspicious ceremony and long life prayer for His Holiness. The board members of Drikung Kagyu Institute presented a mandala offering. Many monks, nuns, guests and followers offered auspicious scarves and received the blessings of Kyabgön Rinpoche. After the morning ceremony, His Holiness joined the tea party in front of the Temple ground and shared a joyful moment with all the people. The representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the welfare Officer of Dekyling Tibetan Settlement in Dehra Dun, paid a visit and offered the scarf for long life and prosperity to His Holiness on behalf of the Tibetan people. Tibetan Youth Congress and Tibetan Woman's Association also offered scarves and wished him long life and prosperity. At 11:30 a.m. His Holiness left for his private residence at Songtsen Library while at 12 a.m. a special lunch was served for all guests and people around the premises of Jangchubling Monastery, Samtenling Nunnery, and Kagyu College. A special tea was served for all at 3 p.m. A football tournament was held to honor the birthday of His Holiness, which Kyabgön Rinpoche enjoyed tremendously, since he himself was a passionate and excellent football player in his youth. In the morning the two finalist teams had received the blessings of His Holiness. The final game between Dekyling and Clement Town was played at 4 p.m. Sixteen teams had participated in the football tournament, including two local Indian teams. This was the third year of the tournament. The first two tournaments, which were held in 2006 and 2007 were sponsored by David Lee from Malaysia, and this year it was sponsored by Shirley from Hong Kong. A specials thanks goes out to them. The tournament was organized by Yeshe Dorje, an attendant of His Holiness, who was assisted by Tsering Phuntsok, a former student of Jangchubling, to create a joyous and friendly relationship among all the people and to uphold the philosophy that “participation and cooperation is more important than winning.”
