The event took place at the Jokhang Temple in Leh, Ladakh, which is the main Buddhist temple at Leh, built in the 1980s by the Ladakh Buddhist Association.

On May 31st, the 8th day of the 4th month (Sagadawa) of the Tibetan Calendar, many hundreds of local Ladakhi lay people as well as tulkus, khenpos, monks and nuns from many traditions came to receive the empowerment. His Holiness accepted a mandala offering from H. E. Choje Togden Rinpoche, the spiritual leader of the Drikung Kagyu Tradition in Ladakh.

His Holiness spoke about the life of the Buddha and about the importance of the practice of Tara. Addressing the large gathering of devotees His Holiness also raised the concern of monasteries in Ladakh falling short of novices. As an example he pointed to the situation at Phyang Monastery, were the number of newly recruited novices this year was much less than last year. He made the plea of a collective effort to counter this regrettable development in the future.
